Where to start

Buying a home or a car

Start with the mortgage calculator, which adds taxes, insurance and mortgage insurance to the monthly payment. If you already have a mortgage, the mortgage payoff calculator shows when it ends and what an extra payment saves, and the refinance calculator compares your loan with a new one. For a car, the car loan calculator works from the price, your down payment, a trade-in, sales tax and fees.

Starting or changing a job

To see what you take home, use the paycheck calculator. It takes out federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare. The hourly to salary calculator turns an hourly rate into a yearly salary and the other way round. Extra hours go into the overtime calculator, and a bonus goes into the bonus tax calculator, which shows what is left after withholding.

Filing your taxes

The income tax calculator works out federal income tax for 2026 bracket by bracket, and the tax bracket calculator finds your bracket. To estimate a refund or what you owe, use the tax refund calculator. If you work for yourself, the self-employment tax calculator covers the tax on your profit. The capital gains tax calculator is for a gain on something you sold, and the sales tax calculator adds tax to a price or takes it out of a total.

Saving and retirement

The compound interest calculator shows how savings grow with monthly deposits, and the savings goal calculator finds the deposit that reaches a goal in a set time. For later in life, the retirement calculator shows how long your savings last, the 401(k) calculator adds an employer match, and the Roth IRA calculator gives the limit for your income. The inflation calculator says what money from any year since 1950 is worth today. The credit card payoff calculator counts the months and the interest it takes to clear a balance.

Fixing up the house and the yard

The paint calculator gives gallons, the tile calculator gives tiles and boxes, and the concrete calculator covers a slab, a footing or a column. Each of these tells you how much to buy, and so do the pages for mulch, gravel, sand and soil, drywall, roofing, flooring, fences and pavers. To measure the space first, use the square footage calculator. The pool volume calculator gives the gallons in a pool.

Health and family

The sleep calculator suggests bedtimes and wake-up times in whole sleep cycles, and the page on how much sleep kids need lists the recommended hours by age. The due date calculator estimates the date from your last period. For your own health and training, there are the BMI calculator, the calorie calculator, the protein calculator, a pace calculator for runners and a one rep max calculator.

Everyday questions

The percentage calculator answers four questions: a percent of a number, one number as a percent of another, the whole behind a part, and a change in percent. The tip calculator splits a bill, and the discount calculator gives the sale price. For dates, try the age calculator, the days between dates calculator, the business days calculator or the date calculator. Other pages cover fractions, averages, ratios, a GPA, the week number of a date and adding time.

The car and the dog

With the tire size calculator you can compare two tire sizes by diameter and see the speedometer error, and the gas mileage calculator gives miles per gallon and the cost of a trip. For a dog, the dog food calculator estimates the daily calories and the cups of food for a healthy dog, and the dog age calculator turns its age into human years.

Questions people ask

Is UncleSums free?

Yes. Every calculator is free, with no account to make and nothing to sign up for.

Does UncleSums keep what I type?

No. UncleSums does not save or share what you type, and the privacy page has the details.

Do I have to press a button to get the answer?

No. The answer changes as you type, so you can try another number and see the result move.

Can I send a result to someone?

Yes. A Copy result button puts the answer on your clipboard as text, for a message or an email, with a link to the calculator on the last line. A Share button makes a link to the same calculator with your numbers already filled in, so whoever opens it sees your answer. Where your phone or computer has a share sheet, the button opens it, and otherwise the link is copied.

Which year do the tax pages use?

The pages for federal income tax, tax brackets, a refund, self-employment tax, capital gains, a paycheck, a 401(k) and a Roth IRA use the figures for 2026.

How far can I trust a result?

A result is an estimate for planning. Check the figures printed on the product you buy, and ask a professional when a mistake would cost a lot. For a loan, a paycheck or a tax return, your lender, your employer or your tax preparer has the final figures.
