These figures are before tax. The weekly, two-week, twice-a-month and monthly pay divide the yearly pay by 52, 26, 24 and 12, and a day is a fifth of a week.

How it works

The yearly pay is the hourly rate times the hours in a week times the weeks you are paid. The weekly pay is the yearly pay divided by 52. The pay for two weeks is the yearly pay divided by 26, the pay twice a month is it divided by 24, and the monthly pay is it divided by 12. A day is a fifth of the hours of a week, at your rate.

If you know the salary and not the hourly rate, the calculator divides the salary by the hours of the year, which is the hours in a week times the weeks. It works out the other periods from the salary.

A worked example

At $25 an hour for 40 hours a week and 52 weeks, the year is $52,000. That is $4,333.33 a month, $2,166.67 twice a month, $2,000.00 every two weeks, $1,000.00 a week and $200.00 a day.

A salary of $62,400 for the same hours is $30.00 an hour.

2,080 hours or 2,087

Forty hours for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management divides a federal civilian employee’s yearly pay by 2,087 hours instead. It explains that a calendar year is a day or two longer than 52 weeks, and that over a 28-year cycle the average is 2,087.143 work hours. Federal pay used 2,080 hours until 1984.

To match that divisor, enter 52.175 in the weeks box with 40 hours, which is 2,087 divided by 40. A rate of $25 then gives $52,175 a year, which is $175 more than at 52 weeks. A salary of $62,400 gives $29.90 an hour and not $30.00.

What it leaves out

All the figures are before tax. Overtime, bonuses and unpaid time off change the year, so take unpaid weeks out of the weeks you enter.
