How it works

Business days are the days from Monday to Friday, less the federal holidays if the box is checked. Between two dates the calculator counts the weekdays in the range and takes off the holidays that fall on them. To find a date, it steps one day at a time, skips weekends and holidays, and stops after the number of business days that you gave.

The start date is counted in the first panel and not in the second. In the first panel you can clear the boxes of the start date and the end date. In the second you can go before the start date as well as after it. If the end date is before the start date, the two are turned round and the answer is the same.

A worked example

From Monday, November 2 to Monday, November 30, 2026 there are 29 days. They hold 21 weekdays and 8 weekend days. Two of the weekdays are federal holidays, Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11 and Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, November 26, so the range has 19 business days.

Ten business days after Monday, November 2 is Tuesday, November 17, because the count passes the 11th, which is a holiday. Over the whole of 2026 there are 261 weekdays and 11 holidays, which leaves 250 business days.

The federal holidays

The eleven days are those of 5 U.S. Code § 6103(a). A holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday on the Monday after. The Office of Personnel Management states the first rule from the statute and the second from Executive Order 11582 of 1971. The calculator leaves out the observed day, as in 2026, when Independence Day falls on a Saturday and the day off is Friday, July 3.

New Year’s Day can be observed in the year before: when January 1 is a Saturday, as in 2028, the day is Friday, December 31, 2027. The rules were checked against the tables of the Office of Personnel Management from 2011 to 2030, and Juneteenth is on the list from 2021.

What it leaves out

Inauguration Day, January 20 of each fourth year, is a holiday only for federal employees in the Washington area, so it is not counted. State and local holidays are not counted either, and neither are the closing days of banks and markets or the days that a company chooses. Check the calendar of the office or the bank that the date matters to.

Questions

What counts as a business day?

Here a business day is a day from Monday to Friday that is not a US federal holiday. Clear the holiday box to count every weekday. A bank or an employer may keep a different calendar, so check yours before you rely on a date.

Which days are US federal holidays?

There are eleven. Five have a fixed date: New Year’s Day on January 1, Juneteenth on June 19, Independence Day on July 4, Veterans Day on November 11 and Christmas Day on December 25. Six fall on a weekday of a month. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday is the third Monday of January and Washington’s Birthday the third Monday of February. Memorial Day is the last Monday of May, Labor Day the first Monday of September and Columbus Day the second Monday of October. Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday of November.

What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?

For most federal employees a holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday on the Monday after. The calculator leaves out the observed day. Independence Day of 2026 is a Saturday, so the day left out is Friday, July 3.

How do you add business days to a date?

Step forward one weekday at a time and skip each holiday. The start day is not counted, so one business day after a Friday is the Monday. Ten business days after Monday, November 2, 2026 is Tuesday, November 17, because Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11 is a holiday. Without the holidays it is Monday, November 16.

Does the count include the start and the end date?

Between two dates, yes: both are counted if they are business days, and each has a box to clear. When you add business days, the start date is not counted.

Which years does the holiday list cover?

The holidays are known from 2011 on. The rules were checked against the tables that the Office of Personnel Management prints for 2011 to 2030, and Juneteenth is on the list from 2021. For an earlier date, clear the holiday box to count weekdays only.
